About the Artist:

Satyabrata Karmakar is an award-winning artist from Kolkata. India. He has dived into the sphere of ‘Realism’ with his one-of-a-kind artworks. In his words, he combines physical entities with dreams, thoughts, memories, and emotions.

He completed his Bachelors in Visual Art from the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Rabindra Bharati University.

Influence/Interest:

Karmakar has a keen interest in Political activities. He tries to follow the political occurrences regularly and is an avid reader of history. However, the rough political scenario has only pushed him away from the city to the peaceful village. The observational skills of Satyabrata identify him as an irreplaceable member of the ‘aware’ art world.

Style of the Artist:

Satyabrata has developed a Hyper-realistic approach to produce his compositions. His brush works are vigorous yet free. His landscapes carry a smooth textural visual to soothe the viewer’s eyes, whereas he creates a strong colour contrast when portraying people and their life. His comfort with Acrylic and Oil paints can be seen through his skills. He is also working with Watercolor.

Most of his works reflect the realistic representation of elements from nature, people of rural and tribal Bengal and have signs of Spirituality.

Until recently and relatively unknown, the world witnessed his Abstract works. He has been creating abstract  inbetween his other works as a break from the usual. I call these work mind soothers as its extremely personal and rarely shown. These were exhibited, for the very first time in our show on  Abstract  expression. They were very well received.

He loves Bengal and continues to travel all over the region bringing her people and surroundings in his works which has become an essential part of his artistic journey.

His hyper-realistic works of people and on-the-spot studies of  beaches and landscapes of Bengal are classical and everlasting and are all the cumulative result of his immense exploration.

Important Works/Series:

Satyabrata has produced a series of artworks depicting  Seascape and landscape of Bengal, During this Pandemic he completed many more plein air landscapes. These are fresh and have a lot of blue sky and even mountains in some cases.

He frequently comes back to his theme of Hindu Sadhus praying. Their pious expression and gnarled hands is skillfully executed in each piece.

Why should you buy his works?

Many years ago, during one of my visits to the Academy of Fine Arts, I saw a beautiful, bright, lifelike Sadhu painting. The painting had great technique, perfect emotion, and big impact.  And that is how I met Satyabrata Karmakar.

He is soft-spoken, a bit shy and is obsessed with his work. Since his college days and even after passing out in 1998 he continues to paint  full-time.

His style has matured yet retaining freshness. They are bright in color yet comforting to the soul. They stay on in the mind, not haunting but calming. Unlike many disturbing styles, Satyabrata’s style is classical, rich and timeless. They are pieces that can be handed down generation after generation as a family heirloom.

And as he is gaining more and more recognition nationally and internationally his works will become even more coveted.

What is he doing currently?

He is continuing with the plein-air studies of the beaches of Bengal. Besides, he is doing a lot of experimental work in various mediums. He is creating more abstracts, drawing figures quite different from his usual realistic style. And sometimes, he is involved in writing poetry as well.
